Welcome back to a 4th of July weekend edition of the Sunday Swing presented by 2nd Swing Golf. This week the PGA Tour celebrated Independence Day in America’s Heartland at the John Deere Classic from the Quad Cities, an event that’s been played since 1971.

The playoff trend continued on tour this week, with the 2nd straight event ending in a playoff and the 3rd in the previous 5 weeks. This week's sudden death playoff featured Argentinian Emiliano Grillo and American Brian Campbell, who won his first tour event in a playoff in Mexico earlier this season. Both players carded four identical rounds this week including a 65, 66, 68, and 67 on Sunday to post 18-under par for the week and extend it to extra holes.

The pair would head back to the tee box at the difficult par-4 18th, where Brian Campbell immediately gained the advantage. Campbell’s drive found the center of the fairway while Grillo missed into the right rough. Campbell was also able to play his 2nd shot first being further back, and he delivered a beauty from 183 yards to just 16 feet. With the heat on Grillo, his 2nd shot airmailed the green leaving him an extremely difficult pitch shot for his 3rd in which he would come up short of the putting surface. As his par attempt came up a bit short, Campbell needed just two putts for the title from close range and he was able to close it out.

The victory is just the 2nd of his career, and makes Brian Campbell the 6th multiple time winner on the PGA Tour this season. More importantly, Campbell moves all the way up to the 28th position in the FedEx Cup standings- a coveted spot to be with the FedEx Cup Playoffs just around the corner.

Winner's Bag | Brian Campbell

For the 2nd time this season and the 2nd time of his career, Brian Campbell claimed victory on the PGA Tour. The 32-year-old Ping staffer leaned on his impressive iron play and short game all week long, but especially coming down the home stretch on Sunday. Since his win in Mexico at the start of the season, Campbell has made two significant changes to his equipment setup.

Driver: PING G440 LST (10.5 degrees @9.4)

Shaft: Fujikura Ventus Black 6 TX (45.25 inches, tipped 1 inch, D4)

Off the tee Campbell still plays the G440 LST (10.5 degrees) with a Ventus Black 6 TX. Interestingly, he plays a 10.5 degree head turned down to 9.4 degrees.  If you looked only at his driving stats this week, it would look like just making the cut would be a success. Campbell lost 4 strokes to the field off the tee, ranking 63rd out of 64 players who made the cut. A lot of that has to do with Campbell’s lack of distance off the tee, as he finished last among players to make the cut in driving distance, averaging just 281.5 yards off the tee. But what he lacks in distance, he makes up for with accuracy, as he found 43 of 57 fairways, which was the 11th best performance of the week.

 Fairway Woods: PING G440 LST (15 degrees @13.5), PING G430 MAX (21 degrees @19.5)

Shafts: Fujikura Ventus Blue 7 TX (15 Degree), Fujikura Ventus Blue 8 X (21 Degree)

Campbell’s first major equipment change comes within his fairway woods. He still games his PING G430 Max 7-Wood, playing it down at 19.5 degrees, but he made the switch in his 3-wood, going from the previous generation Ping G430 3-wood to the latest G440 LST 3-wood, playing it at 13.5 degrees. This club nearly won him the tournament with a sensational 2nd shot on the par 5 17th, which he hit to inside 20-feet on the from 277 yards setting up a birdie that would eventually get him into the playoff.

Irons: PING Prototype (4), PING Blueprint S (5-PW)

Shafts: KBS Tour 120 S

One of the big reasons Campbell was able to overcome such a poor week with the driver was his iron play. Starting with the new Ping iDi (4-utility) with a KBS Tour 120 S shaft. The rest of his set is comprised of the Ping Blueprint S irons (5-PW) also with KBS Tour 120 S shafts. Campbell had this aspect of his game dialed in all week, finishing 8th in strokes gained: approach on the week. His most memorable shot was likely the one from 193 in the playoff where he hit a beautiful high draw to 16 feet, setting up the 2-putt victory.

Wedges: Titleist Vokey Design SM10 (52-12F, 56-10S), WedgeWorks (60-L)

Shafts: KBS Tour 130 X (52), True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 (56, 60)

Campbell was great around the greens this week, finishing 11th in that category and converting on 12/14 scrambling attempts.  His wedges consist of two Titleist Vokey Design SM10’s (52 and 56 degrees), as well as a WedgeWorks lob wedge (60 degrees). His gap wedge contains a KBS Tour 130 X shaft, while the sand and lob wedges hold the Dynamic Gold S400.

His putting was also elite this week, largely thanks to his classic Ping Redwood Anser 2 putter. His best statistical category on the week, Campbell was 6th in putting as he picked up 6.8 shots on the field on the greens.
